Will Travel West For Case Study Architect Thornton Abell

My sister teased me and said, “You never leave the Eastside.” She’s right, but I will travel West for the beach and to see the former home of this Case Study architect.

Thornton Montaigne Abell designed this International Modern Style home for himself in 1937. Although extensively published, it was in terrible shape by the time it hit the market in 2012. The description read, “The property “needs major repair, and the later guesthouse addition should be considered a tear-down.”

To return the home to being a fine example of mid-century modern architecture, the owners enlisted the help of noted architect Scott Prentice. After a meticulous and thoughtful restoration, the interior feels heavenly, with light pouring into every space.

True to its style, the floor-to-ceiling windows create a seamless line between the interior and exterior living spaces.

The home is built on a double lot measuring over 12,000 square feet in the coveted Santa Monica Canyon. It’s also so close to the beach you can hear the waves at night. I love hearing the sound of the ocean. It makes me sleep like a baby. That makes three things I’ll leave the Eastside for.

This home last sold in 2012 for $1,650,000. The current list price is $3,700,000.
