Early work of Pierre Koenig is up for grabs in La Canada

Golden Dreams: California in an Age of Abundance, 1950-1963, describes Pierre Koenig’s journey to becoming the master of steel.

After graduating from the USC School of Architecture, Koenig worked for Raphael Soriano before starting his practice. Within the first two years, he designed three-steel framed homes. One of them was the Squire House in La Cañada. This rare example of Koenig’s early work embodies his experimental structural steel system and palette of industrial materials that he later used for his famed Case Study houses — the Bailey House and the iconic Stahl House — turning various versions of steel, concrete, and glass into glamorous living spaces.

Using steel in the framing, the roof, the walls, and even the floors, Koenig’s careful consideration of the site blends nature and architecture.

Vast open-plan living is the highlight of this three-bedroom home. Tile floors throughout ground the public and private spaces while a hard-to-beat indoor-outdoor connection is achieved with glass walls comprising the entire rear elevation of the house, opening 5323 Palm Dr to a secret world of rugged canyons up close, pines, and hiking trails.

After being tenant-occupied for several years, the Squire House is now listed for sale with an asking price of $1.4 million.
