Award-winning Venice House by Sebastian Mariscal hits the market

Published worldwide as a celebrated example of warm modernism, the award-winning Venice House by Sebastian Mariscal is offered for the first time ever.

Sebastian Mariscal-designed Venice House

To celebrate the outdoors and California’s warm climate, Mariscal, who heads a design studio stateside and in Mexico, designed a series of structures on a 5,862 flat lot around an existing 40-foot pine tree, a California live oak and Japanese magnolia. Each module makes up the whole but simultaneously feel like individual spaces. Owner Michael Sylvester told Design Boom, “they wanted family and guests to have their own private space integrated within nature, so that you wouldn’t know if someone else was in the neighbouring room.”

Clad in ebony-stained cedar siding, the structures are a clear nod to modernism and Japanese minimalism with a modest palette of natural materials. Featuring mahogany windows and extensive custom casework, BSA Design Awards applauds the project for its sophisticated level of craft saying it’s, “something worth aspiring to.” Interior spaces open via solid mahogany lift-and-slide pocket doors opening to interface with exterior patios, courtyards and rooftop gardens. The main living area features five doors sliding into a pocket, creating an almost 23-foot-wide opening on either side, allowing natural ventilation to flow through the space.
